Books are fun, Books are great, Let's sit down with a book today!

Thanks for all the words of encouragement with Morgan's testing! I took Scarehaircare's advice and made a little video of Morgan and gave it to her teacher and speech therapist at Parent Teacher Conferences last week. Here's a little sampling of the video with her reading some sight words and kindergarten books. You'll notice she liked to read the books by looking at them on the video camera monitor more than sitting on the couch.

I am SUPER impressed! What are your tricks?! I can't believe how well she did! How young did you start working on this stuff?

Kiki--
I started when Morgan turned 6 and started kindergarten this past fall. I wish I would have started WAY younger though. I went to a reading workshop for teaching visual learners (Ds) how to read and they suggest starting when they are 6 months old. I started with sight words on flash cards and did it while she was sitting on the toilet. Toilet training and reading at the same time! :) But at the reading workshop they said to start with categories and not sight words--like people's names and food, etc. I'd love to talk to you more about it. Send me your email! Bree is the perfect age to start and it really helps speech too!

Wow, she is doing so great. I am so impressed. I broke down and bought the reading program we learned about last week. I am going to start with Sam and see if it really works. I am nervous though. If you want to have a copy or need any info from it send me an e-mail, I am more then happy to share. tbdingman@comcast.net

Tausha-
I think it is wonderful that you bought that program for Sam. I didn't get it for Morgan because I felt it was a little late for where she is in her reading. She understands the concept of sight reading and is doing some phonics too. She is already putting words together to read in sentences so I couldn't justify the cost but would have LOVED it a few years ago! I loved all the concepts taught at the class though and came home and re-did her flash cards on 11" x 4" cardstock and printed in red instead of black and I made up new ones in the different categories that she had even though we are still working on the sight words. She needs those to be able to read her school books so I am going to continue to teach her those. Keep me updated on how Sam does. I wish I would have started something like this with Morgan when she was only 6 months old!

I have been following your blog for the last few months and love it. I just had my first baby 6 months ago and the first few weeks after his birth I scoured the internet for information about how life was going to be for our family now that we had a son with down syndrome. I am LDS and originally from Utah so one night I typed in lds or utah down syndrome or something like that...i can't even remember....and found your blog. It was such a relief to see a happy and sweet family and gave me hope that our lives are going to be full and fun and changed for the better. Anyway I would love to pick your brain about pretty much everything. I am sure you are way busy but when you have a minute my email is rachelkaesmith@yahoo.com Look forward to talking to you

I love hearing her read to me and watching this video. The only thing missing is her holding her book and pointing to each word for me to tell her the words, then saying,"good job Grandma"
Love our sweet Morgan!

Loved the video! I just stumbled onto your blog. We, also, have 3 girls and 3 boys. Our youngest (2 mos.) has Down syndrome. I would love to know a little more about the reading class you went to and any programs they recommend. I think Morgan is doing exceptionally well, btw!
